Drake's Camp

Back in 1982, Shortly after arriving in Kotzebue Wayne Drake was on a project that needed temporary crew quarters to house the men that were working for him. He not only needed housing for the crew but also his family, it was September and winter was fast approaching so he rounded up the guys and within 7 days had a shell up and Wayne along with wife Betsy, the family and the "guys" moved in. The floors were plywood and the walls still had bare sheet rock with no paint. They were so fast in making the structure (it was only suppose to last 3-4 years) that on the night they moved in they realized that they didn't have a table to eat dinner on and chairs to sit in. A few of the crew went out got some plywood, and lumber and made a table and a couple of benches to sit on for the night. Wayne said "we'll use this until we order furniture" well 27 years later the table and benches are still in camp and your welcome to drink your morning coffee or play your Saturday night game of cribbage on them to this day.

The facility was moved to it's current location on "Front Street" in 1985 and slowly became a place for others to bunk while in town. Drake's Camp has never formally advertised (until now) and has grown by word of mouth. While Drake's Camp is open to the public it mainly caters to other construction firms as well as surveyors, engineers, subcontractors, and in September, hunters!!

Our facility has a "home like" atmosphere with a common living room and dining room. There are six rooms at one end of the building along with a fully supplied kitchen that is available to use, there is a washer and dryer for your use, as well as freezers and refrigerators for your supplies, there are two bathrooms located at the other end of the building and there is wireless internet for your use free of charge.

We have on-site managers that check you in and out and are there to make sure you have a pleasant stay and answer any questions you may have.
